Ever so often I run across someone who inspires me because they are pursuing their healthy. They have lived and learned, fought and found their inner strength. When I talk with people who have discovered their healthy I want to shout their story from the roof tops because of what they have realized along their journey. Recently I stumbled across a wonderful woman at a business event in Nashville, Tennessee. I am still uncertain how exactly we connected, but we did. After the event, I followed up with her and started to follow her social media and blog. As I learned more and more of her heart and story, I had to share with my readers and clients. I asked my new friend Sara to share with my readers’ some of her insight and wisdom as she has journeyed and found her healthy. I do hope you enjoy a snippet into her story and follow her blog and Instagram for amazing recipes and insights.
How did you lose weight?
It’s one of the questions I get asked all the time. It can be really hard to answer, because it can look different for everyone. I could recommend one specific diet or workout plan, but it’s not that simple. What worked for me might not work for you, our bodies are so complex and there are so many factors to take into consideration. I can, however, tell you some of the main contributing factors that helped me lose the weight.
I have struggled with my weight since I was eleven years old. I had gained/lost/regained a total of 100 pounds. A little over a year ago I was going through a really difficult time personally and I remember realizing that something had to change. I couldn’t live like that anymore. I was sad, lonely, and just so tired. I have lost 60 pounds since then and I am still working towards losing the last bit of weight that I have been holding on to. But I can share with you now that there is hope. I have struggled with food addiction and binge eating and I know how deeply rooted those strongholds can be, but you can do this.
What did I do?
I started changing my eating habits, learning what worked the best for my body along the way. It is not a linear journey, there are ebbs and flows, and you will learn from each and every trial that you walk through. I had to learn to love who I was instead of hating myself. I started changing from the inside out. Which leads me to my first piece of advice….
The very first and most important thing is your mindset
You have to start coming at it from a place of love for yourself. Self-hatred only keeps you in the vicious cycle of dieting. This has to be a long term change, not a quick fix. It begins in your mind and in your heart.
Stop with the excuses
I say this in love because I am the queen of excuses. There will always be parties, family gatherings, difficult times in life, but we can’t use that as a reason not to change. The truth is, most of us use food as a comfort during those times and we don’t want to give that up. We have to look past the food itself and look into our own hearts. Let go of the excuses and push through the desire to numb yourself with food, the freedom on the other end of it is worth it.
Start changing one thing at a time
I started with my diet. I began to replace my comfort foods with healthier alternatives. I re-discovered my love for cooking with whole and natural foods. I then began to incorporate more workouts into my lifestyle.
Have grace for yourself
You will make mistakes. You will fail. But those mistakes and failures do not define you. The number on the scale does not define you. You, as a person, are so much more than that. You have to learn to walk through the mistakes and not give up. Make a point to learn a lesson from each struggles. And most importantly, have grace for yourself. Be gentle and kind to yourself like you would be to someone you love dearly.
You can make all these changes and still struggle because we are human beings and sometimes we need some extra support. That is what I love about Lydia. She has a heart to see people find freedom and to be healthy. She can help give you that added help that you need. My hope as you read this is that you will recognize that the change has to start on the inside first and that there is freedom available to you. You can do this!
